End of residency and next year!

10/31/2014

Last night was the celebration of our months' residency. Thank you to everyone involved and the best news of all we will be doing it again!
Next year October 2015. We are all so pleased, and will start planning and dreaming and scheming. There is unlimited potential in the studio and surrounding area to explore and cross art forms and .....so last night was fun and many of us turned out and many sent apologies...
Lou took film, recorded some short interviews and there are photos coming soon.
I'm off to clear the space and hope to upload photos soon.
Leaving you with a final selection from Annis and Anna's time.

For one weekend only!

We would love to invite you to come and see our new paintings and prints at Back Lane West gallery in Redruth this weekend 25th and 26th October.

The private view is from 12noon to 4pm on Saturday 25th (beginning of half term) - if you come all the way to Redruth we will treat you to home made cake and posh tea in tea pots.

Back Lane West is easy to get to by train and easy to park (parking Station Hill).
9 Back Lane West TR15 2BT.

Hope to see you there.

Mike and Lou Brett.

Mike is an art teacher at Penair School, and has really enjoyed creating work for this exhibition. Lou is the associate artist within Shallal Studios and supports it through bid writing and planning. She divides her time and skills between  Pipeline Theatre, Shallal and her print making, and has been working hard to wards this exhibition. They both studied at Falmouth Art School and moved back to Falmouth some years ago.
I am looking forward to seeing their exhibition today.

Residency last week.
Melanie has had a fantastic week, gone in the studio closed the door, loved the space and worked solidly. She has created 4 large paintings and already had great feedback and more doors opening.
Melanie works hard as a community artist so this was time to immerse herself in her own work. Shallal Dance Theatre and Shallal Studio artists have just completed 3 workshops with her within our Wardrobe Project, silk screen textile printing and painting, which we loved.

Next week,
we have some clear studio days and our son Michael Willis is planning to go and do some large drawings. Michael is studying at Truro College on the Art and Design Diploma.
Anna and Annis may go out - at dawn! - to film at Porthmeor Beach for a Shallal 2 performance coming up on Thursday 18th December 6pm at Falmouth Art Gallery, perhaps we will also film in the space?
Hannah from Folklore, Brewers Yard, Falmouth was thinking of using the space to create bowls with friends for a shared meal, a lovely idea but we may not have time this time round. As i write this i wonder whether my family half term  might let me get in to do large drawings - who knows.

Shallal Studios and Friends, October Residency 2014

Shallal Studios is an inclusive platform for artists in Cornwall and a contemporary forum for inclusive arts everywhere. Shallal enjoys working across art forms, and has dynamically engaged with this residency opportunity at Back Lane West to explore new work.

The residency has incorporated as many Studio artists and associate artists as possible, to enable artists to work on a bigger scale, explore installations, projection, new collaborations, performance and cross art forms. Jo Lumber has been writer in residence for one week, thanks to a partnership with Falmouth Art Gallerys new project.

"The whole experience has been really, really brilliant.
Zoe and Sam are extraordinary and it was a real privilege to be in the same room as them and glean and share their energy.
"
Jeanette

We are nearing the end of this part of the residency, Jeanette finished yesterday, Zoe has to work on Wednesday, however the rest of us will all be there on Wednesday afternoon.
There is talk of a final showing/sharing of work and we will keep you posted on that.

Jeanette and Rory created a film piece which we maybe able to share soon,
and meanwhile Jeanette passed on this audio link

worth a listen.

The conversations have been really supportive and inspiring, and we are pursuing more ideas to enable this to continue in other spaces.

Thanks again to Patrick and Jane Lowry of Back Lane West and all who have supported this venture.

BLW residency

Such a lovely 'vibe' at the Back Lane West Studio from the moment we stepped through the door. We all loved it and found our spaces and set to work, with enough familiar and new faces and the fun of being together. Lou was impressed by how everyone just immersed themselves into work straight away. We had been unsure how to go ahead, with which medium, but in the end we settled for our original theme of large drawings.
On Monday the paper gets bigger as Laura has donated 4 wonderful large sheets, and there is a roll from Anne as well!
Jo Lumber had a day pacing the studio on her own ruminating with ideas and then came into the Shallal Studio artists days second day to watch artists work as one of her themes is linking into Shallal 2's Portmeor inspired performance in December at Falmouth Art Gallery. She commented on the sounds and conversations in the studio rising and falling like music.

Some images from the first day.

Our first day was with Anna and Annis.
exploring photography. Their day started with a milk shake!
It was lovely to be there and the sun shone all day, lighting and warming the space.

Eddie and Stuart are in tomorrow and a full list of artists and an invitation to drop into Shallal Studio artists days is on our project page. With still the last week to fill - it was going to be used but we now have it back - and it's rather nice to think what we might revisit and develop that week.
