"Singing the song of both omen and amen”
Seamus Heaney
Laura Menzies and Jim Carter present a joint exhibition at the Spring Gallery concerned with omens and their relationship to transformative processes in nature and the human psyche. Part dialogue between painting and sculpture, part individual interpretation, this new work has roots in a binary world that includes meditations on gender, the emotional life and the sacred.
Laura Menzies’ work operates as a personal register of marks formed from constructs of memory, emotion and indirect references to place. Her paintings suggest a world that we all encounter visually or sensationally, and are imbued with a strong sense of time, depth and ambiguity.
Jim Carter is a sculptor and composer working with wood, found objects and natural materials to explore relationships between human, animal and landscape. His work, drawn from story and myth, has been linked to alchemy and natural cycles of disintegration and renewal.
